Why It's Important to Reset the Honda Accord Maintenance Light
It’s important to reset the maintenance light on your Honda Accord to keep track of when an oil change is due. Additionally, maintaining a log of each oil change and vehicle service is advisable.
Honda Accord Oil Type and Quantity
The 2018 Honda Accord 1.5L 4 cylinder engine requires 3.7 quarts of 0W-20 Synthetic oil. The 2.0L requires 5 quarts of 0W-20 Synthetic oil.
How Often Should You Change the Oil on Your Honda Accord?
It’s recommended to change the oil in your Honda Accord every 3,000 miles. Although some service centers and dealerships may recommend longer periods between oil changes, we advise adhering to a 3,000-mile interval for oil changes to keep your engine in top condition. (this will also prevent unnecessary problems with your Accord)
General Honda Accord Maintenance Tips
Check the Tire Pressure and Tire Tread
Open the driver side door and locate the white sticker to find the recommended tire pressure for the Honda Accord. Inflate your tires when they are cold to prevent overinflation. Check the tread of each tire using the penny test or a tread depth tool.
Rotate Your Tires
We recommend rotating your tires every other oil change, (if you are changing your oil at our recommended 3,000 mile interval) or every 6,000 miles.
Check the Coolant Level
Visually check the coolant level using a flashlight to make sure the coolant is at the required level in the coolant bottle. Coolant levels should not change, this means if your coolant levels are very low, you are leaking coolant.
Check the Brake Pads and Rotors
Use a flashlight to check the thickness of the front and rear brake pads, be sure there is plenty of brake pad remaining. Check the rotors for rust and other anomalies.
Check the Engine and Cabin Air Filters
Open the air filter box and remove the air filter. If the air filter is dirty, either clean it with a vacuum/shake out all the leaves and dirt or replace the air filter with a new one. If the air filter is clean, put it back in place. Behind the glove box is a cabin air filter which filters the air being circulated within the cabin of the car. Check this filter and replace it if it’s dirty.
Benefits of Regular Oil Changes
Based on my experience, cars that neglect regular maintenance often face significant issues. This isn’t a favorable outcome. Even though several manufacturers suggest that engines need oil changes only every 5,000 or 15,000 miles, I recommend ignoring this advice and opting for an oil change every 3,000 miles instead. Regular oil changes in the 2018 Honda Accord offer numerous benefits crucial for maintaining the vehicle’s performance and longevity. Firstly, fresh oil reduces friction among engine components, enhancing efficiency and potentially improving fuel economy by up to 2% as per the U.S. Department of Energy. Secondly, it ensures cleaner engine operation, preventing the buildup of harmful deposits which can diminish engine life.
