Why Its Important to Reset the Honda CRV Maintenance Light
It’s important to reset the maintenance light on your Honda CRV to keep track of when an oil change is due as well as the status of the current engine oil. Additionally, maintaining a log of each oil change and vehicle service is advisable.
Honda CRV Oil Type and Quantity
The 2006-2016 Honda CRV 2.4L 4 cylinder engine requires 4.2 quarts of 0W-20 Synthetic oil.
How Often Should the Oil Be Changed in the Honda CRV?
It is advisable to perform an oil change on your Honda CRV every 3,000 miles. While most service centers and dealerships might suggest extending the interval between oil changes, it’s best to stick to changing the oil every 3,000 miles. This practice ensures your engine remains in excellent condition and helps avoid potential issues with your CRV.
General Honda CRV Maintenance Tips
Check the Tire Pressure and Tire Tread
To determine the recommended tire pressure for your Honda CRV, open the driver’s side door and look for the white sticker. Ensure to inflate the tires while they are cold, as this helps avoid overinflation. For assessing the tread wear on each tire, you can either use the penny test or employ a tread depth gauge.
Rotate Tires
We recommend rotating your tires every other oil change, (if you are changing your oil at our recommended 3,000 mile interval) or every 6,000 miles.
Check Coolant Levels
Visually check the coolant level to make sure the coolant is at the required level in the coolant bottle. Using a flashing light makes this easier. Coolant levels should not change, this means if your coolant levels are very low, you are leaking coolant.
Check the Brake Pads and Rotors
Use a flashlight to check the thickness of the front and rear brake pads, be sure there is plenty of brake pad remaining. Check the rotors for rust and other anomalies.
Check the Engine and Cabin Air Filters
Open the air filter box and remove the air filter. If the air filter is dirty, either clean it with a vacuum/shake out all the leaves and dirt or replace the air filter with a new one. If the air filter is clean, put it back in place. Behind the glove box is a cabin air filter which filters the air being circulated within the cabin of the Honda CRV. Check this filter and replace it if it’s dirty.
Benefits of Regular Oil Changes
I’ve been an automotive technician for the past 10 years and from what I’ve seen, cars that skip regular upkeep tend to encounter frequent and serious problems. This is not a desirable situation. Despite claims by some manufacturers that oil changes are needed only every 5,000 to 15,000 miles, my advice is to do it every 3,000 miles.
For the 2006-2016 Honda CRV, frequent oil changes are key to preserving its performance and durability. Fresh oil minimizes friction in engine parts, boosting efficiency and possibly increasing fuel economy by up to 2%. It also promotes cleaner engine functioning, avoiding the accumulation of damaging deposits that can shorten engine lifespan.
