How to Reset the Chevy Suburban Oil Life Percentage (2007-2015)

Steps to Reset the Chevy Suburban Oil Life Percentage

  1. Turn the Chevy engine on or put ignition into RUN mode by pressing the start button twice without your foot on the brake.

  2. Press the INFO button on the right side of the steering wheel until the oil life percentage is shown on the information display screen. (The button with the car and i icon on it)

  3. With the oil life percentage on the information display screen, hold down the CHECK MARK button on the right side of the steering wheel.

The Chevy Suburban maintenance reminder should only be reset after changing the oil and oil filter on the car.

Why It's Important to Reset the Chevrolet Suburban Maintenance Light

It’s essential to reset the maintenance light on your Chevy Suburban to keep track of oil change intervals and evaluate the state of your engine oil. Additionally, documenting each oil change and service performed on your vehicle is crucial. This not only aids in maintaining your Suburban but also proves advantageous should you opt to sell the SUV in the future.

Chevy Suburban Oil Type and Quantity

The 2007-2015 Chevy Suburban 5.3L 8 cylinder engine requires 6 quarts of 5W-30 Synthetic oil.

How Often Should You Change the Oil on Your Chevrolet Suburban?

It’s advised to change the oil of your Chevy Suburban every 3,000 miles. Despite some service centers and dealerships suggesting longer periods between oil changes, sticking to a 3,000-mile schedule is recommended. (Contrary to Chevy’s own guidance of 5,000 miles between oil changes, we advise not to follow this recommendation!) Regularly changing your oil at these intervals helps keep your engine in top condition and can avert potential issues with your SUV.

General Chevy Suburban Maintenance Tips

Check Tire Pressure and Tire Tread

Find the recommended tire pressure for your Chevy Suburban by opening the driver’s side door and looking for the white sticker. Inflate the tires when they are cold to prevent overinflating them. Cold tires mean either before driving or waiting 3 hours after driving. To check the wear on each tire’s tread, you can use the penny test or a tread depth gauge.

Rotate Your Tires

We recommend rotating your tires every other oil change, (if you are changing your oil at our recommended 3,000 mile interval) or every 6,000 miles.

Check the Coolant Level

Check the coolant level by eye to confirm that it reaches the required full line in the coolant reservoir. A flashlight can make this inspection easier. Because the coolant system is a closed system, significantly low coolant levels suggest there may be a leak.

Check the Brake Pads and Rotors

Use a flashlight to examine the thickness of both front and rear brake pads, ensuring they have ample pad material left. Also, inspect the rotors for rust and any irregularities. Should the brake pads be worn, it’s necessary to replace both the pads and the rotors. Merely replacing either the brake pads or the rotors alone could lead to problems with the brake pedal and often results in higher expenses in the long run.

Check the Engine and Cabin Air Filters

Open the Chevy Suburban air filter compartment and take out the air filter. If it’s dirty, clean it using a vacuum or by shaking out the debris and leaves, or consider replacing it with a new one. If it’s clean, simply reinsert it. Additionally, there’s a cabin air filter located behind the glove box in the Chevy Suburban, which purifies the air circulating inside the cabin. Inspect this filter and replace it if it’s dirty or never been replaced.

Benefits of Regular Oil Changes

Based on my decade of experience in the automotive industry, I’ve noticed that vehicles lacking regular maintenance often encounter various problems, ranging from minor to severe. While some manufacturers suggest oil changes at intervals of 5,000 to 15,000 miles, I advocate for a more frequent schedule, every 3,000 miles, even if it goes against Chevy’s recommendation. For vehicles like the Chevy Suburban, regular oil changes are essential for optimal performance and longevity. These frequent oil changes lessen engine component friction, enhance efficiency, potentially improve fuel economy by up to 2%, and keep the engine cleaner by preventing harmful deposit buildup, thus extending its life.
