Why It's Important to Reset the Nissan Altima Service Light

Resetting the maintenance service indicator on a Nissan Altima is essential to track oil change intervals and check the engine’s oil condition, as well as to know the mileage before the next service is due. It’s also advisable to keep a separate record of each oil change and service for your Nissan Altima by compiling all related service documents. This method ensures the best upkeep of the vehicle and provides evidence of regular maintenance, which is advantageous in case you plan to sell the car in the future.

Nissan Altima Oil Type and Quantity

The 2013-2020 Nissan Altima 2.5L 4 cylinder engine requires 4.9 Quarts of 5W-30 or 0W-20 Synthetic Oil. The 3.5L 6 cylinder engine requires 5.1 quarts of 5W-30 or 0W-20 synthetic oil.

How Often Should You Change the Oil on Your Nissan Altima?

It is recommended to replace the oil in your Nissan Altima every 3,000 miles. While some experts, service centers, and dealerships may recommend extending the time between oil changes, it is important to stick to a 3,000-mile schedule for oil changes. Consistently following this maintenance routine is key to preserving your Nissan Altima’s engine efficiency and preventing a range of possible problems.

What to Do If the Nissan Altima Service Reset Procedure Does Not Work?

If you encounter challenges while trying to reset the service interval on your Nissan Altima, attempt the procedure for a second time. Switch off the ignition and engine, remove the key, and then begin the reset process anew. Make sure that the hood and all doors are firmly shut before you start.

Why is the Nissan Altima Service Light Still On After An Oil Change?

After completing an oil change in a Nissan Altima, it’s crucial to reset the service intervals and maintenance alerts. Just changing the oil and filter won’t turn off the maintenance light automatically. If this indicator remains lit post oil change, it likely means the oil change technician overlooked the reset process.

Nissan Altima Vehicle Maintenance Tips

Check Tire Pressure and Tire Tread

To locate the recommended tire pressure for your Nissan Altima, look at the white or yellow sticker on the door panel, which is exposed when you open the driver’s side door. Ensure you inflate the tires while they are cold to prevent overinflation. This involves either waiting for three hours after the car was last used or inflating the tires prior to driving. For checking the wear on each tire’s tread, you have the option of using the penny test or employing a tread depth gauge.

Rotate Your Tires

We recommend rotating the Nissan Altima tires every other oil change, (if you are changing your oil at our recommended 3,000 mile interval) or every 6,000 miles.

Check the Coolant Level

Check the coolant level to ensure it’s within the correct range in the coolant reservoir – above the minimum and below the maximum mark. A flashlight can be useful for better visibility inside the coolant tank. Since the coolant system is sealed, a significantly low coolant level could suggest a leak. Conduct a pressure test on the system to detect any possible leaks.

Check the Brake Pads and Rotors

Inspect the brake pad thickness on both the front and rear brakes of your Nissan Altima to verify they have enough material remaining. Utilize a brake pad measurement tool for an accurate thickness assessment. Additionally, examine the rotors for rust or any abnormalities. When your Nissan Altima is elevated on a jack or lift, rotate each wheel manually to check if they turn smoothly. Resistance might indicate an issue with the brake caliper or jammed slider pins in the caliper.

Check Brake Fluid Reservoir

It’s vital to maintain a consistently full brake fluid reservoir. If the brake fluid level is significantly low, it usually indicates a leak in the system. Check the brake calipers and lines for any evidence of leakage.

Check Washer Fluid Level

Refill your washer fluid reservoir. During winter, choose a washer fluid with antifreeze to avoid it freezing in the container.

Check the Engine and Cabin Air Filters

Open the air filter box in your Nissan Altima and take out the air filter. If it’s dirty, clean it using a vacuum, compressed air, or by shaking off the dirt and debris. If it’s too dirty, it should be replaced with a new one. If it’s still clean, just put it back. Also, keep in mind the cabin air filter located behind the glove box, which purifies the air inside the vehicle. Inspect this filter and replace it if it’s dirty or hasn’t been changed before.

Check the Power Steering Fluid

Ensure the power steering fluid reservoir in your Nissan Altima is filled to the full mark. A low fluid level might suggest a leak, so if it’s not full, add more fluid and inspect the power steering lines for any signs of leaking.

Benefits of Regular Oil Changes

Having worked as an automotive technician for ten years in both dealership and independent garage settings, I’ve observed that cars missing regular upkeep tend to suffer more frequent and serious problems. Despite some manufacturers suggesting oil change intervals ranging from 5,000 to 20,000 miles, my experience leads me to advise a 3,000-mile oil change interval for the Nissan Altima, irrespective of Nissan’s guidelines. This approach is essential for sustaining optimal vehicle performance and longevity. Regular oil changes can minimize engine wear, potentially improving fuel efficiency by about 2%. It also keeps the engine cleaner, crucial for preventing the build-up of harmful deposits that can reduce the engine’s lifespan.
