Why It's Important to Reset the Lincoln MKX Maintenance Light
Resetting the oil life percentage in your Lincoln MKX is crucial for monitoring when oil changes are due and assessing the condition of the engine oil, which helps in scheduling future services. Additionally, we recommend keeping a personal log of each oil change and service. Collect and save all related service records. This approach ensures optimal maintenance of your Lincoln MKX and serves as proof of consistent upkeep, beneficial in case you decide to sell the car later on.

How Often Should You Change the Oil on Your Lincoln MKX?
It’s strongly advised to change the oil in your Lincoln MKX every 3,000 miles. Although some professionals, service centers, and dealerships might suggest extending the interval between oil changes, maintaining the 3,000-mile schedule is important. Regular adherence to this interval is crucial for maintaining the Lincoln MKX’s engine’s performance and averting various potential issues. Routine oil changes contribute to the smooth functioning of the engine and also offer a chance for a thorough inspection of the vehicle with each service. This practice helps in early identification and resolution of small issues, preventing them from developing into bigger problems.
What to Do If the Lincoln MKX Service Reset Procedure Does Not Work?
Should you face difficulties in resetting the oil life percentage on your Lincoln MKX, it might be helpful to start the process over. First, turn off both the engine and ignition, then initiate the reset sequence from the beginning. Ensure that the hood and all doors are securely closed before you continue.
Why is the Lincoln Service Maintenance Light Still On After An Oil Change?
Just replacing the oil and oil filter doesn’t automatically turn off the maintenance light. If the Lincoln MKX oil life percentage does not reset after changing the oil, it typically means that the reset process wasn’t performed following the oil change.
General Lincoln MKX Maintenance Tips
Check Tire Pressure and Tire Tread
You can find the suggested tire pressure for your Lincoln MKX on the white or yellow label located on the door panel, visible when you open the driver’s side door. To avoid overinflating the tires, it’s important to inflate them when they’re cold. This means either waiting three hours after the car has been driven or inflating the tires before you drive. To assess the tread wear on each tire, you can use the penny test or a tread depth gauge.
Rotate Your Tires
We advise rotating the tires of your Lincoln MKX with every other oil change, assuming you’re following our suggested 3,000-mile oil change interval, or otherwise every 6,000 miles.
Check the Coolant Level
Ensure that the coolant level falls within the appropriate range in the coolant reservoir, which is between the minimum and maximum marks. Using a flashlight can help you see better inside the coolant container. Given that the coolant system is closed, a noticeably low coolant level might indicate a leak. Performing a pressure test on the system is a good way to identify any potential leaks.
Check the Brake Pads and Rotors
Check the thickness of the brake pads on both the front and rear brakes of your Lincoln MKX to ensure they have sufficient pad material. Use a brake pad measurement tool for a precise thickness evaluation. Also, look over the rotors for signs of rust or irregularities. When your Lincoln MKX is raised on a jack or lift, manually spin each wheel (with the parking brake released) to see if they rotate smoothly. If any wheel shows resistance to movement, it could point to a problem with the brake caliper or stuck slider pins in the caliper.
Check Brake Fluid Reservoir
Keeping the brake fluid reservoir fully filled in your Lincoln MKX is crucial. If you find the brake fluid level unusually low, it usually suggests there’s a leak in the system. In such a case, first top up the brake fluid reservoir and then inspect the brake calipers and lines for any signs of leakage.
Check Washer Fluid Level
Top up your washer fluid reservoir. In the winter months, opt for a washer fluid that contains antifreeze to prevent it from freezing in the container.
Check the Engine and Cabin Air Filters
Open the air filter box of your Lincoln MKX and remove the air filter. Clean it with compressed air, a vacuum, or by shaking off the dust and debris if it appears dirty. Replace it with a new one if it’s excessively dirty. If it’s relatively clean, simply reinstall it. Remember to also check the cabin air filter found behind the glove box, as it filters the air within the cabin. Replace this filter if it’s dirty or has never been changed.
Check Power Steering Fluid
Make sure the power steering fluid in your Lincoln MKX reaches the ‘full’ mark on the reservoir. A reduced fluid level could indicate a power steering fluid leak. If the level appears low, top up the fluid and then check the power steering lines for potential leaks.
Benefits of Regular Oil Changes
In my decade-long career as an automotive technician, working in both dealership and independent garage environments, I’ve noticed that vehicles lacking regular maintenance often face more frequent and severe issues. Even though some car manufacturers recommend oil change intervals between 5,000 and 20,000 miles, I advise for the Lincoln MKX to undergo an oil change every 3,000 miles, regardless of Lincoln’s own recommendations. This practice is key to maintaining the vehicle’s peak performance and longevity. Consistent oil changes are vital in reducing engine wear and can enhance fuel efficiency by up to 2%. It also keeps the engine clean which helps prevent the accumulation of damaging deposits that can shorten the engine’s life.
