Why It's Important to Reset the Jeep Grand Cherokee Maintenance Light

It is important to reset the maintenance light on your Jeep Grand Cherokee to keep track of the timing for oil changes and to evaluate the current state of the engine oil. Additionally, maintaining a comprehensive log of each oil change and service done on your vehicle is essential. (It will also help if you ever want to sell your Jeep!)

Jeep Grand Cherokee Oil Type and Quantity

The 2011-2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee 3.6L 6 cylinder engine requires 6 quarts of 0W-20 Synthetic oil.

How Often Should You Change the Oil on Your Jeep Grand Cherokee?

We suggest performing an oil change on your Jeep Grand Cherokee every 3,000 miles. Although certain service centers and dealerships might recommend extending the interval between oil changes, it’s best to stick to a routine of changing the oil every 3,000 miles. This practice is key to keeping your engine in optimal shape and helps in avoiding potential issues with your vehicle.

General Jeep Grand Cherokee Maintenance Tips

Check Tire Pressure and Tire Tread

Find the recommended tire pressure for your Jeep Grand Cherokee by opening the driver’s side door and looking for the white sticker. Inflate the tires when they are cold to prevent overinflating them. This means either before driving or waiting 3 hours after driving. To check the wear on each tire’s tread, you can use the penny test or a tread depth gauge.

Rotate Your Tires

We recommend rotating your tires every other oil change, (if you are changing your oil at our recommended 3,000 mile interval) or every 6,000 miles.

Check the Coolant Level

Inspect the coolant level visually to ensure it’s at the necessary full mark in the coolant reservoir. Using a flashlight can facilitate this process. Since the coolant system is sealed, if your coolant levels are significantly low, it indicates a coolant leak.

Check the Brake Pads and Rotors

Use a flashlight to check the thickness of the front and rear brake pads, be sure there is plenty of brake pad remaining. Check the rotors for rust and other anomalies. If the brake pads are low, replace both the brake pads and the rotors. Replacing just the brake pads or just the rotors can cause brake pedal issues and will usually end up costing you more money down the road.

Check the Engine and Cabin Air Filters

Open the Jeep Grand Cherokee air filter compartment and take out the air filter. If it’s dirty, clean it using a vacuum or by shaking out the debris and leaves, or consider replacing it with a new one. If it’s clean, simply reinsert it. Additionally, there’s a cabin air filter located behind the glove box in the Jeep Grand Cherokee, which purifies the air circulating inside the cabin. Inspect this filter and replace it if it’s dirty or never been replaced.

Benefits of Regular Oil Changes

With a decade of experience as an automotive technician, I have noticed that vehicles lacking consistent maintenance typically encounter a range of problems, both minor and significant. Despite recommendations from some automakers for oil changes every 5,000 to 15,000 miles, my advice is to opt for an oil change every 3,000 miles, even if this differs from Jeep’s own recommendations. For vehicles like the Jeep Grand Cherokee, regular oil changes are essential to keep them running well and to extend their service life. Changing the oil frequently helps in minimizing friction among engine parts, which can enhance efficiency and potentially increase fuel economy by as much as 2%. It also ensures the engine remains clean, preventing the build-up of harmful deposits that can shorten the engine’s lifespan.
