Why It's Important to Reset the Genesis G90 Maintenance Light
Resetting the maintenance light on your Genesis G90 is vital for monitoring the schedule of oil changes and assessing the condition of your engine oil. Furthermore, it’s crucial to keep a detailed record of every oil change and service your vehicle undergoes. This practice is not only important for maintenance but also beneficial if you decide to sell your Genesis in the future.
Genesis G90 Oil Type and Quantity
The 2017-2024 Genesis G90 3.3L 6 cylinder engine requires 7.3 quarts of 5W-30 Synthetic oil. The 5.0L 8 Cylinder engine requires 8.5 quarts of 5W-20 Synthetic oil.
How Often Should You Change the Oil on Your Genesis G90?
We recommend changing the oil in your Genesis G90 every 3,000 miles. While some service centers and dealerships may advise longer intervals between oil changes, adhering to the 3,000-mile oil change schedule is advisable. (Genesis actually recommends waiting 10,000 miles in between oil changes, DO NOT follow this guideline!) Consistently following this routine ensures your engine remains in excellent condition and helps prevent potential problems with your vehicle.
General Genesis G90 Maintenance Tips
Check Tire Pressure and Tire Tread
Find the recommended tire pressure for your Genesis G90 by opening the driver’s side door and looking for the white sticker. Inflate the tires when they are cold to prevent overinflating them. This means either before driving or waiting 3 hours after driving. To check the wear on each tire’s tread, you can use the penny test or a tread depth gauge.
Rotate Your Tires
We recommend rotating your tires every other oil change, (if you are changing your oil at our recommended 3,000 mile interval) or every 6,000 miles.
Check the Coolant Level
Check the coolant level by eye to confirm that it reaches the required full line in the coolant reservoir. A flashlight can make this inspection easier. Because the coolant system is a closed system, significantly low coolant levels suggest there may be a leak.
Check the Brake Pads and Rotors
Use a flashlight to examine the thickness of both front and rear brake pads, ensuring they have ample pad material left. Also, inspect the rotors for rust and any irregularities. Should the brake pads be worn, it’s necessary to replace both the pads and the rotors. Merely replacing either the brake pads or the rotors alone could lead to problems with the brake pedal and often results in higher expenses in the long run.
Check the Engine and Cabin Air Filters
Open the Genesis G90 air filter compartment and take out the air filter. If it’s dirty, clean it using a vacuum or by shaking out the debris and leaves, or consider replacing it with a new one. If it’s clean, simply reinsert it. Additionally, there’s a cabin air filter located behind the glove box in the Genesis G90, which purifies the air circulating inside the cabin. Inspect this filter and replace it if it’s dirty or never been replaced.
Benefits of Regular Oil Changes
Drawing from my ten years of experience as an automotive technician, I’ve observed that vehicles not regularly maintained often face various issues, from minor to major. Although some car manufacturers advise oil changes every 5,000 to 15,000 miles, I recommend an oil change every 3,000 miles, even if it contradicts Genesis’s guidelines. For models like the Genesis G90, frequent oil changes are crucial for maintaining performance and longevity. Regular oil changes reduce friction between engine components, thereby improving efficiency and boosting fuel economy by up to 2%. Additionally, it keeps the engine cleaner, avoiding the accumulation of damaging deposits that could reduce the engine’s lifespan.
