Why It's Important to Reset the Ford Fusion Maintenance Light
It’s essential to reset the oil life percentage in your Ford Fusion to track when oil changes are needed and to evaluate the state of the engine oil, as well as to determine the timing for your upcoming service. Moreover, it’s advisable to maintain a personal record of each oil change and service by gathering all relevant service documents, ideally organized in a folder or a similar system. Such a method guarantees the best maintenance for your Ford Fusion and acts as evidence of regular care, which can be advantageous if you choose to sell the vehicle in the future.
Ford Fusion Oil Type and Quantity
The 2013-2018 Ford Fusion requires 5.7 Quarts of 5W-30 Synthetic oil.
How Often Should You Change the Oil on Your Ford Fusion?
Changing the oil in your Ford Fusion every 3,000 miles is highly recommended. While some experts, service centers, and dealerships may propose longer periods between oil changes, sticking to this 3,000-mile interval is vital. Consistently following this routine plays a key role in preserving the engine performance of your Ford Fusion and preventing a range of possible complications. Regular oil changes not only ensure smooth engine operation, but they also provide an opportunity for a comprehensive vehicle check-up during each service. This approach is beneficial in detecting minor issues early on, preventing them from escalating into major problems.
What to Do If the Service Reset Procedure Does Not Work?
If you encounter challenges while attempting to reset the oil life percentage in your Ford Fusion, consider restarting the procedure. Turn off the engine and ignition first, then begin the reset process from the start. Make sure that the hood and all doors are firmly shut before you proceed.
Why is the Ford Fusion Service Maintenance Light Still On After An Oil Change?
After completing an oil change in your Ford Fusion, it’s important to manually reset the oil life percentage. Simply changing the oil and filter won’t automatically reset the maintenance light. If the service reminder remains active post-oil change, it usually indicates that the reset procedure was skipped after the oil change.
General Ford Fusion Maintenance Tips
Check Tire Pressure and Tire Tread
To locate the recommended tire pressure for your Ford Fusion, check the white or yellow sticker on the door panel, which becomes visible upon opening the driver’s side door. Ensure to inflate the tires while they are cold to prevent overinflation. This involves either waiting for three hours after the car was last driven or inflating the tires prior to driving. For evaluating the wear on each tire’s tread, consider using either the penny test or a tread depth gauge.
Rotate Your Tires
We advise rotating the tires of your Ford Fusion with every other oil change, assuming you’re following our suggested 3,000-mile oil change interval, or otherwise every 6,000 miles.
Check the Coolant Level
Check the coolant level to ensure it’s within the correct range in the coolant reservoir – above the minimum and below the maximum mark. A flashlight can assist in getting a clearer view inside the coolant container. Since the coolant system is sealed, a significantly low coolant level could suggest a leak. Conducting a pressure test on the system can help detect any potential leaks.
Check the Brake Pads and Rotors
Inspect the brake pad thickness on both the front and rear brakes of your Ford Fusion to verify they have adequate brake pad material. Employ a brake pad measuring tool for an accurate assessment of thickness. Additionally, examine the rotors for any indications of rust or abnormalities. When your Ford Fusion is elevated on a jack or lift, rotate each wheel manually (with the parking brake disengaged) to check if they turn freely. Resistance in any wheel’s movement might indicate an issue with the brake caliper or seized slider pins in the caliper.
Check Brake Fluid Reservoir
It’s essential to always maintain a full brake fluid reservoir in your Ford Fusion. A significantly low brake fluid level often indicates a leak in the system. Should you discover that the fluid level is depleted, replenish the brake fluid reservoir first, and then proceed to examine the brake calipers and lines for any evidence of leaks.
Check Washer Fluid Level
Refill your washer fluid reservoir. During the winter, choose a washer fluid with antifreeze to avoid freezing inside the container.
Check the Engine and Cabin Air Filters
Access the air filter box in your Ford Fusion and take out the air filter. If it looks dirty, clean it using compressed air, a vacuum, or by shaking off the dirt and debris. Should it be overly dirty, replace it with a new one. If it’s still clean, just put it back in place. Also, don’t forget about the cabin air filter located behind the glove box, which purifies the air inside the cabin. Inspect this filter and change it if it’s dirty or hasn’t been replaced before.
Check the Power Steering Fluid
Ensure that the power steering fluid in your Ford Fusion is filled up to the full line on the reservoir. A low fluid level might suggest a leak. If you find the level is low, refill the fluid and subsequently inspect the power steering lines for any signs of leaking.
Benefits of Regular Oil Changes
Throughout my ten years as an automotive technician, with experience in both dealership and independent garage settings, I’ve observed that vehicles which neglect regular maintenance tend to encounter more frequent and serious problems. Despite some automakers suggesting oil change intervals ranging from 5,000 to 20,000 miles, I strongly recommend for the Ford Fusion an oil change every 3,000 miles, irrespective of Ford’s guidelines. This approach is crucial for sustaining the vehicle’s optimal performance and longevity. Regular oil changes play a significant role in minimizing engine wear and can improve fuel efficiency by as much as 2%. Additionally, it ensures the engine remains clean, which is essential in preventing the build-up of harmful deposits that could reduce the engine’s lifespan.
