The 2013-2024 Honda HRV maintenance reminder should only be reset after changing the oil and oil filter on the car.
Why It's Important to Reset the Honda HRV Maintenance Light
It’s important to reset the maintenance light on your Honda HRV to monitor when it’s time for oil changes and to assess the current state of the engine oil. Additionally, maintaining a log of all oil changes and services done on your Honda HRV is recommended and advantageous.
Honda HRV Oil Type and Quantity
The 2013-2024 Honda HRV 1.8L requires 3.9 Quarts of 0W-20 Synthetic Oil.
How Often Should You Change the Oil on Your Honda HRV?
It is advised to change the oil of your 2013-2024 Honda HRV every 3,000 miles. Although some service centers and dealerships might suggest lengthening the time between oil changes, sticking to a consistent 3,000-mile interval for oil changes is crucial. This practice ensures your engine remains in optimal condition and helps to avoid various potential issues with your Honda HRV.
What to Do If the Service Reset Procedure Does Not Work?
If the Honda service interval reset procedure does not work, try the procedure again. Turn the ignition and engine off, remove the key and restart the process again from the beginning.
Why is the Service Maintenance Light Still On After An Oil Change?
After completing the oil change in the Honda HRV, it’s essential to reset the service intervals and maintenance lights manually. Merely changing the oil and oil filter won’t automatically switch off the maintenance light or reset the oil percentage to 100%. If the light remains on post oil change, it indicates that the technician who performed the oil change may have forgotten to reset the light.
General Honda HRV Maintenance Tips
Check Tire Pressure and Tire Tread
Find the suggested tire pressure for your Honda HRV by opening the driver’s side door and checking the white/yellow sticker on the door panel. To avoid overinflating, inflate the tires when they are cool, meaning either waiting 3 hours after the last time the car was driven or just inflating the tires before being driven. To assess the tread wear on each tire, you can either use the penny test or a tread depth gauge.
Rotate Your Tires
We recommend rotating the Honda HRV tires every other oil change, (if you are changing your oil at our recommended 3,000 mile interval) or every 6,000 miles.
Check the Coolant Level
Inspect the coolant level visually to confirm it falls within the correct range in the coolant bottle – it should be above the low mark but below the full mark. Employing a flashlight can aid in getting a clearer view inside the coolant reservoir. Since the coolant system is sealed, a markedly low coolant level indicates a possible leak in the system. Perform a pressure test on the system to identify any leaks of coolant.
Check the Brake Pads and Rotors
Examine the thickness of the front and rear brake pads with a flashlight, ensuring that there is sufficient pad left. Additionally, you can determine the precise thickness of the pads using a brake pad measurement tool. Inspect the rotors for rust and other irregularities. When your Honda HRV is raised off the ground or on a lift, manually spin each wheel to check if it rotates smoothly. If it doesn’t, this could point to a malfunctioning brake caliper or seized slider pins in the caliper.
Check Brake Fluid Reservoir
Ensuring that the brake fluid reservoir is filled to the appropriate level is crucial. A significantly low level of brake fluid typically indicates a leak in the system. Inspect the brake calipers and brake lines for any signs of leaking.
Check Washer Fluid Level
Top up your washer fluid reservoir. In the winter months, we recommend using washer fluid with antifreeze properties to prevent the fluid from freezing inside the bottle.
Check the Engine and Cabin Air Filters
Open the air filter box and remove the air filter. Clean it with a vacuum, compressed air, or by shaking off the dirt and leaves if it’s dirty, or you might opt to replace it entirely. If it’s clean, just place it back in the filter box. Also, there’s a cabin air filter behind the glove box in the Honda HRV, which cleans the air inside the vehicle. Check this filter and replace it if it’s dirty or has not been replaced before.
Benefits of Regular Oil Changes
Drawing from my decade-long experience as an automotive technician, I’ve noticed that cars without consistent maintenance often encounter issues more frequently and more severely. Despite some manufacturers advising oil changes at intervals ranging from 5,000 to 20,000 miles, I advocate for oil changes every 3,000 miles, irrespective of Honda’s recommendations. This practice is especially crucial for the 2013-2024 Honda HRV to preserve its performance and prolong its life. Regular oil changes minimize engine component friction, boosting efficiency and potentially increasing fuel economy by up to 2%. Moreover, it results in a cleaner engine, which aids in avoiding the accumulation of harmful deposits that can reduce engine lifespan.
