Why It's Important to Reset the Maintenance Light
Resetting the Mazda CX-5’s maintenance light is essential for tracking oil change intervals and assessing the current state of the engine oil. Additionally, maintaining a log of each oil change and service conducted on the vehicle is advantageous and recommended.
Mazda CX-5 Oil Type and Quantity
The 2017-2024 Mazda CX-5 needs 4.8 quarts of 0w-20 Synthetic oil.
How Often Should You Change the Oil on the Mazda CX-5?
It is advisable to change the oil in your 2017-2024 Mazda CX-5 every 3,000 miles. Although some service centers and dealerships might suggest increasing the duration between oil changes, sticking to a 3,000-mile interval for oil changes is best. This practice ensures your engine stays in excellent condition and aids in averting potential issues with your vehicle.
General Mazda CX-5 Maintenance Tips
Check the Tire Pressure and Tire Tread
Find the suggested tire pressure for your Mazda CX-5 by opening the driver’s side door and finding the white sticker. It’s best to inflate the tires while they are cool to avoid overinflation. To assess the tread wear on each tire, you can employ the penny test or utilize a tread depth gauge.
Rotate the Tires
We recommend rotating your tires every other oil change, (if you are changing your oil at our recommended 3,000 mile interval) or every 6,000 miles.
Check the Coolant
Inspect the coolant level visually to confirm that it’s at the necessary level in the coolant bottle – above the low line and below the full line. Utilizing a flashing light can make it easier to see inside the coolant reservoir.. Since the coolant system is sealed, if your coolant levels are significantly low, it indicates a coolant leak.
Check the Brake Pads and Rotors
Use a flashlight to check the thickness of the front and rear brake pads, be sure there is plenty of brake pad remaining. Check the rotors for rust and other anomalies. If your car is jacked up off the ground, spin the wheel and make sure it spins freely. If it does not, this might indicate a bad brake caliper.
Check Engine and Cabin Air Filters
Open the air filter compartment and take out the air filter. If it’s dirty, clean it using a vacuum or by shaking out the debris and leaves, or consider replacing it with a new one. If it’s clean, simply reinsert it. Additionally, there’s a cabin air filter located behind the glove box in the Mazda CX-5, which purifies the air circulating inside the cabin. Inspect this filter and replace it if it’s dirty or never been replaced.
Benefits of Regular Oil Changes in the Mazda CX-5
With a decade of experience as an automotive technician, I’ve noticed that vehicles without consistent maintenance often encounter both frequent and more serious problems. Despite certain manufacturers advising oil changes every 5,000 to 15,000 miles, my advice is to change the oil every 3,000 miles, irrespective of Mazda’s recommendations. This is especially crucial for the 2017-2024 Mazda CX-5 to preserve its performance and durability. Fresh oil minimizes friction between engine parts, boosting efficiency and enhancing fuel economy by as much as 2%. It also promotes cleaner engine functioning, preventing the accumulation of damaging deposits that can shorten the engine’s life.
